As the nation’s drug companies have come under fire for selling Viagra and other drugs to children, the U. S. health care system is taking a step in the right direction.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) today recommended the addition of the generic version of Viagra (sildenafil), to its prescription benefit. The drug’s generic name is sildenafil citrate, or the same drug as the original, but its brand name, Cialis, is different.
Under the new plan, the brand name is to be sold in the retail pharmacy only, and the generic version, which will be sold in the hospital, will only be available as a free drug. It is recommended that consumers choose a generic version of Viagra, rather than a brand name drug. However, consumers have to pay a premium for a drug, and some people have been reluctant to give it up.
The FTC’s recommendation is to allow generic Viagra to be sold in hospitals, but not to other pharmacies. Consumers can purchase the brand name version of Viagra and make sure they have the drug available as a free drug.
As it is a new drug, generic Viagra is already available in some form, including prescription medicine. However, many of the people who have had to pay the full price of the generic Viagra in Canada for the brand name version are now paying a premium for a drug that may be better.
In order to make the new program more affordable, the drug companies have also launched a website called “CanadaHealth”, which they hope will help the consumers choose the brand name version of Viagra. The website will also help them make sure they have the drug available in a more affordable form.
“In the United States, the drug industry is currently looking to sell a generic version of Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction,” said Michael Pearson, president of the Canadian Pharmacy Association, which represents the drug companies. “We’re trying to get the generic version of Viagra approved by the Food and Drug Administration and then it’s just going to be available to purchase by mail.”
The drug companies also are hoping to encourage people to buy the brand name version of Viagra. “If you have questions about whether the brand name version of Viagra will be available to you at the pharmacy, you can contact your physician or pharmacist in the U. for that matter.”
In the U. S., Canadian pharmacies, which have a good deal of the brand name version, will now be able to sell the generic version of Viagra. The company says it can also supply the brand name version of Viagra for patients who have been prescribed the brand name version of Viagra.
The drug company is now reviewing the issue of its pharmacy benefits and has recommended that consumers consider switching to the brand name version of Viagra. The company’s website says: “If you are suffering from a severe form of erectile dysfunction and you have been prescribed a brand name Viagra to treat that issue, you should not have to pay the full price of Viagra.”
The FDA has also asked the drug companies to update their patient information leaflets to include information about Viagra and the cost of generic and brand-name drugs.
“This information will help people make more informed decisions about the use of generic Viagra in their health care,” Pearson said. “It will also help to ensure that consumers who are using the brand name version of Viagra are not using this generic Viagra to treat the same conditions as those they are using the brand name version of Viagra.”
According to the FDA, there is a need to ensure that patients can choose the brand name version of Viagra, so it can be sold in the hospital instead of in the pharmacy.
